Looking for must-visit destinations to catch up on your postponed travels in 2022? On Friday 29th October 2021, Lonely Planet, one of the most renowned travel guide producers, released their annual ‘’Best in Travel’’ list. Among the top 10 countries to visit in the upcoming year, Mauritius is featured third by the travel guide company.

Lonely Planet has been providing expert travel advice to travellers since 1973. Their experience in the travel industry as travel guide professionals helped them in providing the best must-visit destinations for unique travel experiences. The ‘’Best in Travel’’ list is issued every year, created by a panel of five travel experts and five travel enthusiasts who carefully go through hundreds of destinations to get a shortlist. Following recent and ongoing events that impacted the travel industry, Lonely Planet based its ranking on much more than the looks. The destinations selected in the 2022 ‘’Best in Travel’’ list were judged on their topicality, ‘wow’ factor and readiness to welcome visitors in such times. Commitment to sustainable tourism practices also came into play in the choice of destinations, aiming to showcase the positive impact of travellers with sustainable travel choices and better inform readers.

For Tim Hall, Vice President of Experience at Lonely Planet, the unveiling of the top destinations to visit happened to be just in time: ‘’ After an enforced hiatus, it’s time to take those long-postponed travel plans off the shelf and make them a reality.” Hall also asserted: “The lists celebrate the world in all its wonderful enticing variety, from the lagoons and forests of the Cook Islands to the waterfalls and mountains of Iceland’s Westfjords, via Auckland’s natural and urban delights.”

Mauritius was thrilled to learn about its ranking as mentioned by Hon. Steven Obeegadoo, Prime Minister of the island: ‘’ We’re delighted that Mauritius has been recognised by Lonely Planet as a must-visit destination for 2022. Mauritius has been consistently celebrated in recent years for developing sustainable activities and practices for incoming tourists. From our multitude of green zones, including forests, parks and nature reserves, to our offering of eco-friendly activities such as electric-biking and the banning of single-use plastics, Mauritius is an exemplary case of eco-tourism in action.”
